Rich Homie Quan ‘Back To The Basics’ – Track By Track Mixtape Review

Rich Homie Quan - Back To The Basics

It’s been Uh Minute since the 2015 lackluster trio of mixtapes including ABTA(Album Before The Album) from the forgotten about Trap Vocalist Rich Homie Quan. His outside issues including an assault case and disputes with his previous label have really overshadowed his recent musical output.

It’s crazy to think how far Rich Homie has fallen behind Young Thug when they were both neck and neck in 2014-2015. The most noteworthy project at the time was the joint mixtape under the under Rich Gang imprint The Tour. This came out at the peak of Rich Homie Quan’s career so far and then it all went sour.

With the exception of Uh Minute which is approaching two years old, I haven’t really checked for Rich Homie songs for a good while. This will be the first time reviewing a project from an artist, not in my regular circulation. The title alludes to this taking back to the pain and struggle stories which Rich Homie does well so let’s see…

1.Never Made It

Nice smooth echoing background vocals and then some hard-hitting bass, I like this. There is some real hunger in Rich Homie’s voice, he sounds calculated for an attack at the top again. A song for the doubters family, friends, and the industry as a whole.

Grind like you never made it!

2. Heart Cold*

The second track on the mixtape and I am enjoying the way it’s going, very bouncy. The stuttering hook is flames, my only critique is the instrumental is probably a bit overpowering for his vocals. This isn’t the hit yet but it seems like the mixtape is warming up already.

3. Back End

Rich Homie really does have a unique flow in comparison to the other “mumble rappers”. It’s the country twang in his delivery. The song itself is alright, a mixture of flossing and persistence.

4. Lord Forgive Me*

This is better, immediately this has the highest replay value for me so far.The production, lyrics, and clarity are the closest to the old Rich Homie so far. I thought the song would be a slower tempo based on the song title but I was wrong.

5. Gamble

Although, I liked it at the start these songs are beginning to sound the same. This is disposable, to be honest, some of the bits I can’t even understand what he is saying. This is all production and not much else.

6. Word Of Mouth

These are the songs I can’t really stand. The song name just gets’s repeated one billion times. The narrative makes sense though, it’s a statement track to those questioning him and his whereabouts. The problem with the song is his flow gets boring quickly.

7. Da Streetz

All production. The one thing I can’t complain about the mixtape so far is that it is not consistent production wise. I just feel he could’ve got something a bit more soul like from Zaytoveen. Although, that’s probably the meaning of going back to basics.

8. Money Fold

Maybe it was the wrong day today to listen to this mixtape this is a Friday/Saturday night turn up music haha. The yeah yeah ad-libs are really irritating as well to Travis Scott like. He has not stretched himself with sounds on this mixtape yet.

9. Replay

I’m calling it now this project ain’t going to stick. This is fast food music, even though I didn’t really have any expectancy I expected some diversity. “Replay” of the last few songs to be fair.

10. Safe(ft Cyko)*

Finally, a song that doesn’t have the sound like it has the same production as the last one. It is money-centric like most of the other song but his vocals are clearer. This one is an anthem for the hustlers, best song with one to go.

11. Str8

This sounds like a mess to me the sounds are all over the place. Not the best way to close out a mixtape.

Right, as you can probably pick up from my comments I wasn’t really too impressed with this project. There isn’t really much experimentation with sounds and most of the songs don’t have the immediate replay value.

I think with the exception of a few decent standouts this won’t be the project really gets everyone’s attention back to what he can do. I expect with his album he will deliver a bit more diversity but let’s see.

Top 3 tracks: Lord Forgive Me, Safe(ft Cyko) and Heart Cold
5/10
