Lil Uzi Vert ‘The Perfect Luv Tape’ – Mixtape Review

Lil Uzi Vert - The Perfect Luv Tape

Lil Uzi Vert continues his mixtape run with his third mixtape in quick succession following up to his acclaimed April release Lil Uzi Vert VS The World which included the monster hit single Money Longer.

Lil Uzi really is one of my favorite new age “hip hop” artists of today. The fluidity of his style is only really comparable to Young Thug, but with even more aggression and eccentricity. It is that very style which makes the common narrative of sex, drugs, and money altogether different.

As with all Uzi songs the use of Ad-libs is heavy on the project (“ayy, yeahhh, wahhhtt and wow”). This is something I noticed the Migos brought to the fore a few years ago, now a lot of artists have incorporated this into their deliveries. Although, to his credit, the way Uzi uses his ad-libs really does energise his punchlines.

The production for Uzi projects is always a focal point and this one isn’t too dissimilar to his two recent mixtapes in that regard. Uzi really does find the pockets in these beats for his multi-tempo melodic / rapid fire flow (e.g. Original Uzi). He really does shine on those beats produced Maalay Raw, their connection reminds me of Future/Young Thug and Metro.

As per usual with all Lil Uzi mixtapes there aren’t many features. The obvious notable names are that of Offset and Future, the latter Seven Million ft Future for me being more potent on this. Although, Too Much Sauce from Project ET (check out the project review here) has more replay value for me.

The songs Erase Your Social and Ronda are the real standouts and its tracks like this and others of this nature (e.g. Grab The Wheel and Nuyork Nights at 21) which drew me into Uzi in the first place.

Erase Your Social delves into how everything has now flipped around for Uzi, coupled with some braggadocios content. The Ronda narrative is similar but he uses Ronda Rousey’s highly publicized loss in 2015 for a smooth inspirational anthem. The tropical twist on this instrumental is what really got my attention it’s not a sound I’ve heard him on yet.

With 10 tracks in total, this really isn’t a long project. It’s much of the same from Uzi and consistent sonically. This mixtape at points doesn’t feel like much progression but more just an extension to his previous mixtape, which gets quite repetitive.

I don’t feel the perception of Uzi is that of your typical hip hop rapper per se, it’s more genre-less or as he says a Rockstar. Two other artists which are equally impressive coming up under this kind of style are Famous Dex and Lil Yachty

Top 3 Tracks: Do What I Want, Erase Your Social, Ronda
7/10
