Introducing Minz: The New 'Fireboy' of Afrobeats

As an avid SoundCloud user and a casual listener of Afrobeats music occasionally a lesser known artist gets thrown into the mix. A week ago whilst flipping between two of the arguably the biggest hits from the scene right now; Mr Eazi  – Leg Over and  Wiz Kid Ft Drake Come Closer that very artist was Minz.

After listening to his music for a few days I felt obliged to write something slightly different to what I usually do. The aim of this post is to shine a light on an artist lesser known to many but in my eyes a raw talent.

Who is Minz?

Minz (formally known as Damilola Aminu) is a multi-talented artist, producer, and songwriter from Lagos currently managed by Purple Tunes and OsazuwaNSE. Minz began recording his music 2 years ago and works closely with friend and producer Mowizzy(read more here). I am guessing he is in his early 20’s but I wasn’t able to find any confirmation either on that side of things.

On the side of music, his work is beginning to bear fruit with his slow-burning 2016 single Aunty Patricia currently sitting at 200k+ plays SoundCloud. Being the casual listener of Afrobeats music that I am listener I’m sure there are probably there are other artists I’ve overlooked. Although, the unpolished natural nature to the Aunty Patricia visuals make them unique and refreshing.

What have I heard of Minz?

The first song which caught my attention and has received the most replay from me over the last week or so is Odoyewu(I think it translates to “My love”??). It’s a high tempo melodic song with some points where I can hear the Starboy(WizKid) influence. I guess this is to be expected with Wizkid being the biggest artist in Afrobeats for some time now.

Generally, with Afrobeats artists much like with Dancehall artists I rarely listen to their full-length projects and just check out their constant flow of singles. Although, after a few days of playing Odoyewu I delved into the 5 Track playlist  Introducing Minz.

The short playlist blends really well almost sounding like a mini Afrobeats mix, Neva Stop really sticks out from the rest as more of an R&B song.

I will be checking for Minz more in the future, I could see him working well with a J Hus (Common Sense follow-up?).
