Giggs follows up on his culture shifting Landlord album with his 16th mixtape WAMP 2 DEM (What Happened 2 Them). The combination of having two of the biggest anthems under his belt (Whippin Excursion and Lock Doh) and the features which he dominates its clear to most that he is having his best run yet; without compromising at all.
Although not everyone understands or appreciates or his impact in the UK and after the KMT Drake feature THEY came out to hate(ahem Dj Akademiks). Personally, I couldn’t care less about what THEY think I’m very excited to hear what feels like a constantly evolving Giggs sounds on this mixtape I expect some heat!
1. Gully Niggaz
Let’s go! I’m liking the spin on this kicking off with keys and then the hard drop. It’s really bugging me that I can’t remember where it’s from though. Giggs sounds energetic and calculated at the same time.
2. Ultimate Gangsta (Ft 2 Chainz)
Ok Giggs, now I’m fully awake to the mixtape haha. No funny business, this is the hard production he has to be on to be fully impactful to the masses. That comeback to the haters of his KMT verse has come in already, expected it a bit later on. 2 Chainz went in and out, was feeling the 4th July flow, but the verse felt like it went on for too long and he was just rhyming for the sake of it.
“I said Batman, they thought man was joking..” Whoosh!!
3. Straight Lifestyle
Ah, he’s taken his foot off people’s necks for an interlude of flexing on the track. It’s got a nice bounce, I just keep hearing in the back of my head Batman,duh-ner-ner-duh-ner. I’m going to need some other flows.
4. Times Ticking (Ft Popcaan)
Is it me or can you also hear how “If you’re talking the hardest, Giggs better pop up in your thoughts as an artist” would fit perfectly with this?. Feels like I’ve been quite critical so far but I don’t like Popcaan on this type of production. This is and the 2 Chainz feature are examples where I think a UK feature would’ve been suited(e.g. Skepta).
5. The Essence*
This is sounding like some storytelling introspective Giggs is coming based on the tempo.Yes, I really like this song he’s bringing us back to the years and years he was getting blocked and shut down. This is the Giggs a lot of newer fans don’t even know he has in him, every line is meaningful.
“Them Giuseppe shoes won’t delay that speshy bang”
6. Linguo (Ft Donae’o)
As much as I like Donae’o and this flow he’s done on what feels like 1000 songs it’s getting jarring. I wasn’t actually excited to hear this as I knew that it would sound exactly like this.I guess it all links into the #BringBackFunky vibe. My prediction is this won’t exceed Lock Doh, it doesn’t even have a patch on Normal tbh.
7. Gangstas & Dancers (Ft Lil Duke and Young Thug)
Well, this was unexpected, but guess it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise with rumors of a Thug and Kojo song. He’s obviously paying attention to whats going on over in the UK (see this VLAD interview). Now, this is the best overseas collab so far with Thug and Giggs on the same page flow wise. The balance was almost right but there was a lot more Thug than Giggs(at what point did Lil Duke come in lol??).
8. Moist Pussy
This just sounds too Lil Pump type wave for me, nah not feeling. I guess this is what you will get on a mixtape, what do I expect?.
9. 50 Cali
Out of all of the more bouncier songs so far (Straight Lifestyle and Moist Pussy), this is most the best one. Giggs is jumping in and out of the pockets of the beat as he always does. He actually keeps up with the Hopscotch tempo throughout the whole song.
10. Outsiders (Ft Footsie and D Double E)*
The legendary generals come together with Giggs to deliver a Trap/Grime concoction. Giggs works really well on this one, that D Double E verse takes this to another place from around 2.50. It’s a song that you can just bop out and skank to.
11. Horror Movie
A Horror Movie you say? nothing is going to touch what Giggs did on Saw. That is probably my favorite Giggs song of all time, that aside this is good in its own right. Think Undertaker/Kane coming into the ring in WWE, that’s where Giggs is going with this dark side flow.
12. Peligro (Ft Dave)*
Dave actually reminds me of a young Giggs in some ways, with the way he carries himself and the domineering style he can showcase sometimes. Both artists cruise through the loopy track in easy free-flowing nature. Spanish, girl, Valeria, the title(Danger) must’ve been Dave’s idea.
“Til Jus pulled up in a Jurgen Klopp BM, That’s an angry German” – Dave
13. Ruler
Another Horror Movie.
This was a funny mixtape, at some points with songs like Moist Pussy I was like meh this is lackluster. Then he would come back one or two tracks later with a Outsiders and bring it back. For the most part, it was the UK features who came through and delivered the overseas features didn’t really compliment him well. Overall, I wouldn’t say this is anything new from the re-invented Giggs it’s like the best of what we’ve got in last year or so. Expecting a shake-up of flows with his next project.
Top 3 Tracks: The Essence, Outsiders, and Peligro
