Future’s ‘The Wizrd’ – Track By Track Album Review

Future’s ‘The Wizrd’ – Track By Track Album Review

The Wizrd” Super HNDRXX gifts us with a fresh release to start of 2019 with a bang following on from 2018 which for most of the critics wasn’t his strongest.  To be honest, I agree, all of the three projects dropped were lukewarm with the bag-grab Wrld on Drugs probably the strongest of the three (Beast Mode II and Superfly the others).  Reason being, in 2018 there weren’t any moments where Future had a song which dictated the wave. Although, even with 2018 acting as a rest for PLUTO his output was on par if not greater than any artist in Hip Hop, which can only be commended.

Future’s 2017 run started off on par with the 2015 trifecta, the question I have with this album is will we get HNDRXX or SUPA

1. Never Stop*

A slow-burning start on the album intro with a hard-hitting drop reminiscent to Last Breath in all senses. This is the emotive and motivational Future I like the most. Cool, I’m warmed up for this now let’s go!

I just wanna see my dawgs ball, seven figures

2. Jumping on a Jet*

I remember when I first heard this and thought what the hell is this FUTURE throwaway crap. Now I’m hearing it again I can’t fault it too much, this guy can make new repetitive flavors out of anything.  That trolling not adding up line is funny, another 6ix9ine jab?

3. Rocket Ship

“I’ve been popping since my demo b*tch!” the double-time slow down flow Future uses here is so unconventional. A few background adlibs would’ve added to the overall sauce of this generic track. I can tell why it’s one-minute long.

4. Temptation

HNDRXX is alive and kicking on this, trying to fight demons and find peace in perkys.  I liked the honest piano breakdown towards the very end of the track, what a classic. Nothing I haven’t heard from him before though.

5. Crushed Up

Another Jumping on a Jet, this ain’t it chief.

6. F&N

Ok, this is an improvement on Crushed Up but still microwave. Got to the end of the song with still no idea what F&N stands for.

7. Call the Coroner

POA vibe here, I am literally starting to feel like I’ve heard enough of Future. I think having HNDRXX imprinted in my brain before listening to
The Wizrd” has closed my mind off. After Jet, this is the second in the microwave but hype line.

8. Talk Shit Like A Preacher

What can even say about this repetitive garbage? another copy and paste job only made remotely interesting by the breakdown towards the end (like Temptation).

9. Promise U That

Something which demonstrates the softer HNDRXX side, with bass that knocks you so sideways it drowns out the sentiment of the lyrics.

10. Stick To The Models

I’ve been waiting for something standout and to be honest since the intro I haven’t heard it. Everything I’ve heard post the intro has been a 5/10 not “9 and up”.  I can’t fault the catchiness though and this production is disgustingly haunting.

11. Overdose

hahaha I’m literally sitting in my living room laughing, this cannot be serious? “my pinky finger on drugs”. This must be for the meme moments.

 12. Krazy But True

The idea of this song is great with Future spinning off reasons why he should be acknowledged more for his impact in the industry.  I would argue some of the points he raised actually originate from Weezy (mixtape dropping), would’ve been good if he would’ve stuck on the topic a bit longer before going back into his comfort zone.

They jumped on my wave before they throwed Max in the cage

13. Servin Killa Kam

Not it cheif, next one.

14. Baptize

I think I’m beginning to understand this project now, all of these snippets from old songs are reminders of what he’s done before (Slave Master kicks in at 2.01). I didn’t like the roley’s for real segment but the rest was cool.

Got a Bel Air address, but this money never changed me

15. Unicorn Purp ft Young Thug & Gunna

This song went on way too long before Future’s kids actually said anything. The thing is once they did say something it was even less understandable than Future is.

16. Goin Dummi

Future’s ability to create these sing song melodies out of nothing is truly remarkable even with another average song like this.

17. First Off ft Travis Scott

You know the album is a flop when both the songs with Thug and Travis are both trash. This is litreally on the same level as FUTURE

18. Faceshot

Not it chief, next one.

19. Ain’t Coming Back

He’s right there really isn’t no coming back, this album is terrible. The whole I’m the leader of the new-school could’ve been mastered in like 10 tracks.

20. Tricks On Me*

An old-school bounce on this smooth album closer. Tracks like this really show how confused this album has been. There is no consistent narrative or correlation between the majority of the songs.

This album felt like Future was trying to recreate what he’d already executed excellently on projects like DS2 and HNDRXX. I’m not hearing much progression in Future anymore, its like copy and paste a couple of tracks from previous works and change the hook around. There isn’t really much more to say, I think he’s stretched himself too thin in the market.

Top 3 Tracks: Tricks On Me, Jumpin on a Jet, Never Stop

Rating: 6.3/10
