J-Soul ‘Jane 2 Miami’ – Track By Track EP Review

J-Soul-–-Jane-2-Miami-EP

After a string of quality releases on his SoundCloud, the 17-year-old new Cash Money artist J-Soul(Jeffery Soul) debuts his first official project; Jane 2 Miami. For those who don’t know the young Canadian like many of his “New Toronto” peers, merges the art of rapping and singing.

This will act as the first the track by track review lets see how it goes!

1.Jane 2 Miami*

This is a really warm introduction to the project. I’m really loving the 1994 Big Poppa sample at 22 seconds in. It gives off a feeling of appreciation of everything Soul has accumulated thus far in his short career and the love for his ends.

2.Cash Money (feat. Neno & Birdman)

This song hits hard, very memorable hook which really sticks in my head. This is Cash Money all over; flashy lifestyle and rags to the riches stories. I could imagine a feature on this song with some of the other Young Money artists on it.

3.Mula*

Another money-related song following Cash Money. I really like the diversity in J-Soul’s delivery on this, though. Most definitely my favorite song so far, I can actually imagine a video to this tune with money falling from the sky ha.

4.Mia Interlude

Ya Dun Know, feeling the Jamaican vibe on this one really slows down the EP in a good way. This transitions brilliantly into Slow Wine.

5.Slow Wine*

This is the second standout track since Mula for me. There is a trend in Hip Hop at the moment with island influences. Artists like J-Soul, Drake and Tory etc do it the best because of their ability to rap and also hold a note. It would be interesting to see a video for this on Miami Beach.

6.Midnight

Wow, this is something else, its got a bit of a “Travis Scott – Antidote” energy to it. Very trippy and dark in contrast to the other songs which have had a sunshine beach vibe to them.

7.Until the Sunrise

Ah, this is smart I see what he’s done with this. This actually does feel like a song you would hear before going home at a club. It’s my least favorite track on the EP but a nice round up nevertheless.

This is the most cohesive EP I’ve heard in recent times. It really does feel like 24 hours in Miami. J-Soul gives us an insight into his background from being homeless and of course his doubters/haters in a melodic manner.

His delivery does remind me of Roy woods at points. Although, to be fair both of these artists have clearly been heavily influenced by the Toronto heavy weight The Weeknd, which is to be expected.

I want to see how Birdman helps to plot the next steps, another more personal project which dives into his come up more would be nice. Hopefully, they put the money behind him as I can see a trajectory much like the previous Canadian signed to Cash Money. It would be terrible shame to see him end up in the Cash Money lost and found like some other artists who signed…

If you’re looking for more J Soul check out the November Twelve playlist below there are a few standout tracks (e.g. Private Dancer, Bare Gal and Tell Em)
