AI and The Stanford Ignite Experience, Jas Sidhu

Hey, I’m Jas – I’d describe myself as a curious and energetic individual who enjoys spending time on a few things: artificial intelligence (AI), music production and hunting for the world’s best burger!

I work at a consultancy as part of a team using innovation and emerging technologies to disrupt business models and traditional ways of working. I also create alliances with AI start-ups and academic institutions as part of this role and have a particular focus on how the application of AI can be leveraged in creating the businesses of the future, and in helping today’s businesses to remain competitive.

I’m passionate about trying to close the knowledge gap that is occurring in society due to the rate of exponential change driven by technology and megatrends. I want to support the creation of equal opportunities for all by reducing the barriers to be able to acquire certain knowledge.

I’m also inspired by the opportunities that technologies such as AI will create.

I’ve just finished the Stanford Ignite programme. It’s a 3-month programme for innovators to formulate, develop, and commercialise their ideas. You’re exposed to both the fundamentals of business and the practical aspects of identifying and evaluating business ideas and moving them forward.

You’re split into teams and create a solid business plan and model around an idea and pitch to venture capitalists at the end of the programme. The team I worked with aimed to tackle the issue of poor compliance with prescribed medicines.

From the course, I learned to use a framework to really develop and commercialise ideas. I learned it’s important to quit talking! Get an idea out there and test it with the market – that will give you the validation and feedback you need.

I also learned a range of things, such as how to pitch ideas, how to negotiate more effectively and how to manage difficult team dynamics. Such things are critical regardless of your career. I met a range of like-minded people and the teachers are phenomenal – all passionate about the subjects they are teaching about. I highly recommend the programme.

In 2017 I’m going to continue to invest in learning more about AI and execute on that knowledge – whether it be to build my own company or to grow a practice within a company. I also want to make progress on learning the piano – with a specific grade and timeframe in mind.

As a side note – I always promote the value of investing in emotional intelligence. Read about it and practice it! It helps you to get more out of life and helps you to make more of a positive impact on people.
