Chip ‘Power Up’ – EP Review

Chip - Power Up

All glass ceilings will be broken down.

Power Up! The third EP from Chip fresh off Rated Award nominated Rap VS Grime mixtape and his two-sided Believe and Achieve EP series.

Power Up is a high energy project. The Fire in My Studio opener presents the direction of the project, using negative energies as fuel. He reflects on the last 12 months from wars to the present state of the industry.

Industry politics is something he really sheds light on early with Mad Wid It and Power Up.

Mad Wid It highlights the endorsement of Bugzy Malone by Charlie Sloth and the “agents” in the industry. Power Up is a direct shot at Wireless Festival for their allegiance to Tinie Tempah.

Unlike with the previous projects, it seems Chip really had the time to focus. The cohesion is better in comparison to previous projects; where the scattered standouts like Bookey and Hear Dis were overshadowed due to the war dubs at the time.

The Chip Video Spree

The promotion of was project was also better. He did an NTFR interview, vicious Logan Sama freestyle and four music videos in the space of a month

Chip – Power Up
Chip – New Day
Chip – Mad Wid IT,
Chip ft Kranium – Style Dat.

The track which really hit home for me was the stripped down and open My Ones.

This is one of three features on the EP all from different genres. He suits songs like this and proven his capability to do them previously with 2012 Help Me ft Delilah from the London Boy Mixtape.

Chip has always been a talented artist but for some, his self-confidence overshadows this.

Although, from the era of F*ck Radio the training ground of all top grime artists; Chip (Chipmunk at that time) is the only artist in his age range of (25 and under) which is still at the pinnacle of the scene today.

Chip showcases himself as a versatile artist with an underlying grime sound but sprinkles of dancehall and hip hop.  I’m interested to hear what the Man who isn’t genre specific has up his sleeve for his next project which I would expect would be an album.
